How Sleep Apnea Affects Your Heart Health

Dec 24, 2024  (0)
image.jpegSleep apnea is a common problem that affects about 18 million Americans. It happens when your breathing keeps stopping and starting during sleep, usually because your throat muscles relax too much or your airway gets blocked. This can make you snore loudly or gasp for air while sleeping.
These breathing interruptions can happen a few times a night, or even as often as every minute or two if the sleep apnea is severe. Because of this, people with sleep apnea often wake up feeling tired, have trouble staying awake during the day, get morning headaches or dry mouth, and may have problems with memory or paying attention.
The biggest problem with sleep apnea is that it lowers how much oxygen your body gets at night. Without enough oxygen, your body gets stressed and can’t work the way it should. Over time, this can lead to serious health problems like irregular heartbeats, heart failure, heart disease, and even stroke.
In short, sleep apnea and heart health are closely linked. Let’s take a closer look at how sleep apnea can affect your heart and blood vessels.
What’s the Connection Between Sleep Apnea and Heart Disease?
Did you know heart disease is the number one cause of death in the US and worldwide? Things like not getting enough exercise, drinking too much alcohol, smoking, and eating unhealthy foods can raise your risk. Certain health problems also make heart disease more likely, like high cholesterol, diabetes, high blood pressure, being overweight, and sleep apnea.
If sleep apnea isn’t treated, it can raise your risk of heart disease and problems with your heart’s rhythm. People with sleep apnea are 2 to 4 times more likely to have irregular heartbeats than those who don’t have it. The chances of heart failure are also much higher—about 140%—and the risk of heart disease is about 130% higher for people with sleep apnea.
How Sleep Apnea Affects Cardiovascular Health?
When your breathing keeps stopping, it can damage your heart—and not just your heart, but your whole circulation system. Scientists are still finding out more about how sleep apnea affects the heart, but they already know some of the ways it happens.
  • Obesity
Being overweight is a big reason why people get both sleep apnea and heart disease. Sleep apnea on its own can lead to heart problems, but being overweight also increases your risk for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes—all of which are bad for your heart.
  • Sympathetic Nervous System
Every time your breathing stops, your blood’s oxygen level drops. When this happens, your body goes into a kind of emergency mode, making you gasp for air and causing your heart to beat faster and your blood pressure to go up.
  • Intrathoracic Pressure
People with sleep apnea try to breathe against a blocked airway, which creates unusual pressure in their chest. Over time, this extra pressure can hurt the heart, cause irregular heartbeats, problems with blood flow, and even heart failure.
  • Oxidative Stress
When someone with sleep apnea stops breathing, their oxygen level drops a lot. When they finally take a breath, the oxygen level goes back up. These ups and downs put stress on the body and lead to inflammation, which can hurt the heart and raise the risk of heart disease.
If you think you might have sleep apnea, talk to your doctor. Getting help can make a big difference for your heart and overall health.
